The surface of a new boat is coated with a thin gel coat over the glass fibre hull, which is vulnerable to abrasion.

The fender protects the boat from damage during mooring, but the surface of modern plastic fenders often traps grit and dirt. Constant rubbing of bare fenders on topsides can cause abrasion and significant damage to the gel coat, which is both unsightly and costly to repair.

Made from a particularly non-abrasive loop-knit acrylic fabric with a soft cushion effect surface, Fenda-Sox® fender covers fit tightly over the fender, preventing grit and dirt becoming trapped.
